In July 2001 at ALPACAFEST in Red Deer, Alberta, a small group of alpaca breeders held "brain storming" sessions about organizing a world class alpaca event to promote our industry.
Discussions focused on:
a quality "Select Sale" advertised across Canada, as well as internationally,
with entries open to all Canadian breeders of registered alpacas,
(To ensure high
standards, a committee will make a "blind" selection based on conformation and
fibre.)
a non-profit, spectator friendly "Futurity", to showcase juvenile and yearling
alpacas, and
an effort to attract new people to the industry
The name "Canadian National Alpaca Sale & Futurity" was selected and original participating farms agreed to commit their time and money ($500 per farm) to "get the ball rolling".

"CNASF" has become the major alpaca event in Canada. As of April 2007, the numbers are impressive: - $425,000 has been raised in our Stud Service Auctions - $390,000 has been paid out in futurity prize money and - $1,490,000 of breeding stock has been sold in the Select Sale.
Thanks to the amazing support of the alpaca breeders in Canada, the CNASF has been very profitable and we believe in giving back that profit to the Canadian Alpaca Industry.
